I read somewhere that people in large groups often walk in sync. I think it might have been something to do with a structural engineer report into bridges.
Anyway, I have been sat at different times people watching and you know what? You can see how they pick up the beat. In pairs, groups and enmasse. It’s definitely interesting to see how we connect on a subconscious level.
Slow your shutter down (somewhere below 1/60) focus on a fixed object (in this case the famous clocks at the entrance of Flinders Street Station) and then wait for the hustle and bustle of morning commuters. You should get a nice freeze frame of one leg and the other in slight motion. They say (whomever ‘they’ are) that you shouldn’t shoot below 1/60 without a tripod because of the risk of camera shake but if you manage to get yourself braced, breathe slowly and press the shutter button gently (and you’re patient!) you can get the results you want. Besides, tripods take away from the freedom of street photography on the move!
Remember it’s your camera, your composition and your picture, you can pretty much do what you like with it. Don’t be afraid to try things not found in rule books. That includes taking pictures in areas you supposedly need a permit in or are a security risk (with no explanation).
You can put your mobi down now and go out and take some pictures!
