There is a myth around the world of travel that it is all glamour and glory. The truth is that beyond the fringes of our social media accounts, a travellers life is anything but glamorous.

Travel hails from the word ‘travail’ which means to journey, laboriously, over distance. The glamour associated with travel has been manufactured by Hollywood, via its glitzy movies of sun, seas and sand. The reality of travel is freezing coach journeys, broken down trains, delayed transfers, sleeping rough in airport or buss terminals, food poisoning and monsoon rains as you trek towards your next designated sleeping zone. What we are left with either side of that are the images of fleeting moments that we capture.

The journey is what makes the memory of those images, not the destination.

So on world tourism day, think about the tales that don’t make it onto our Instagram or Facebook pages. They are the things that make the moments we capture feel all the more fantastic. That’s life in perspective.
